Wyoming DOE EPSCoR Supported Projects

Fossil Fuels - Wyoming’s vast resources
in coal, oil, and natural gas are the subject of research aimed at adding
value to these products and reducing the environmental impact of their
production and consumption. Projects address novel coal upgrading processes
that make use of Wyoming’s abundant supply of carbon dioxide, new catalysts
for petrochemical refining and more efficient means of removing sulfur
and nitrogen oxides from flue gasses.
Electrical Energy - Several
projects are studying ways to improve the efficiency of machines that use
electrical energy, alternative means of generating electricity such as
solar power, and reduction of electromagnetic interference caused by the
use of more efficient electrical devices. The growth of Wyoming’s wind
and solar power generation industries will depend on finding answers to
the questions addressed in these research projects. More efficient use
of our available electric energy resources is also a subject of this research.
Environmental Remediation - More
effective and efficient means of protecting and restoring our environment
are the subject of several interdisciplinary projects, including phytoremediation
for hazardous material recovery, microbial processes for containing contaminants,
electrokinetic removal of hydrocarbons from soil, reducing the use of volatile
organic compounds in spray forming, and less hazardous methods of drying
natural gas. Solution of these environmental problems are critical to the
continued growth of Wyoming’s energy industry as well as to the development
of new industry in the state.
