General Information on All Semesters

It is generally recognized that an important factor in an undergraduate's decision to enter graduate programs in science and engineering is participation in a quality research activity during upper-class years.

The Wyoming National Science Foundation EPSCoR Fellowships are designed to support highly meritorious undergraduate students in the biological, physical and social sciences, engineering, mathematics; in certain areas of health sciences; and students in science and mathematics education in independent research projects. The students are mentored by UW faculty. The Fellowships are awarded on the basis of the scholarship of the student, the proposed research activity and the mentoring by the faculty member.

The stipend for the fall and spring semesters is $700; for the summer term, the stipend is $3,500.

Since 1992, Wyoming NSF EPSCoR has supported over to 600 undergraduate students as EPSCoR fellows. Of these, more than 400 have been Wyoming residents.

Students may hold the EPSCoR fellowships for a total of three semestersStudents need to be aware that having been awarded an EPSCoR Fellowship does not guarantee that they will be awarded another semester’s fellowship.  They must go through the same application process as other students each time they apply.

The summer fellowships are made possible by NSF EPSCoR and NASA EPSCoR partnering with the Colleges of Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Health Sciences and the UW Honors Program.

DEADLINE FOR FALL APPLICATIONS IS SEPTEMBER 15, 2009

FALL 2009

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

Applications are sought from University of Wyoming undergraduates in the biological, physical and social sciences, engineering, mathematics; in certain areas of health sciences; and students in science and mathematics education in independent research projects for research fellowship awards for the fall semester of 2009.

The stipend will be $700 for the Fall Fellowship, and it is intended to support undergraduate fellows during an independent research activity directed by a University of Wyoming faculty member.  Literature reviews and survey research are not ordinarily considered for these awards.

NOTE THAT APPLICATIONS ARE TO BE SUBMITTED ELECTRONICALLY

Who Should Apply?

Undergraduates in the sciences (see above), mathematics, engineering, certain areas of health sciences (disciplines supported by the NSF) and students in science and mathematics education who will complete their Bachelor’s degree at the University of Wyoming.  Preference will be given to students in their junior year who intend to enter careers in research.   First generation college students, minorities and women are especially encouraged to apply.

Information for EPSCoR fellows who are reapplying

Students may hold the EPSCoR fellowships for a total of three semesters. Students need to be aware that having been awarded an EPSCoR Fellowship does not guarantee that they will be awarded another semester’s fellowship.  They must go through the same application process as other students each time they apply.

Additionally, fellows who are reapplying need to include in the project description a brief discussion of the EPSCoR-supported research they have done under past fellowships.

Selection Process

Applications undergo careful review by a panel of UW faculty members based on the following:

  • evaluation of scholarship,

  • evaluation of research activity, and

  • evaluation of faculty support.
