Application Deadline: March 10, 2008

Applications are sought from University of Wyoming first-year students in engineering, mathematical and computer sciences, the biological and physical sciences, social sciences, and some areas of health sciences for research fellowship awards for summer of 2008.

The stipend will be $3000 for the six-week Summer Fellowship. The stipend is intended to support first-year students for an independent research activity directed by a University of Wyoming faculty member during the summer term following their freshman year. Students will be enrolled for one hour of EPSCoR independent study credit. Tuition for the credit hour is paid by Wyoming NSF EPSCoR.

Who Should Apply

First-year UW students in the areas of the sciences and engineering listed above. Students should contact the EPSCoR Office (766-3544 or 766-3545) if they are unsure if their area of study is an area supported by this program.

A GPA of at least 3.5 is required.

Eligible students include those who have completed fewer than 30 credit hours at the University of Wyoming and who have transferred fewer than 15 hours from another college. Credits earned while enrolled in high school will not be counted toward the 15 credit hour transfer allowance. Credits earned by exam (AP, CLEP, IB, etc.) will be considered credits earned while in high school. Preference will be given to students who are considering careers in research. Minorities and women are especially encouraged to apply.

How to Apply

To apply, applicants should identify an appropriate faculty mentor to guide the project. If the student does not know an appropriate faculty member, he or she should contact the EPSCoR office as soon as possible to get assistance in finding one. The faculty mentor must complete the brief Mentor Faculty Form.

After discussing the project with the faculty mentor, applicants should submit the following:

1.  The Application Form.

2.  The Letter of Intent. Applicants should provide a brief description (2 pages) of their area of interest and the specific problem that they wish to investigate, including an explanation of the importance of the issue. They should also include information about past classes and activities that prepare them for this project.

3.  A Transcript. A transcript of current and completed college coursework.  This can be an unofficial transcript.  A GPA of at least 3.5 is required.

4.  Letter of Recommendation. Applicants should ask a faculty member familiar with their work to discuss their abilities to work independently and to carry out the planned research.  This faculty member should be someone other than the mentor faculty. Recommendations from high school teachers are not encouraged.

5.  The Mentor Faculty Form.  This must be completed by the faculty member.

Application materials may be obtained also from the Wyoming EPSCoR Office, Wyo Hall 422/424.

Students can access a helpful on-line booklet on writing competitive grant proposals on the Nebraska EPSCoR web site: http://epscor.unl.edu/rfps/winnerscircle.shtml. It is addressed to faculty, but students also can benefit from a quick look at the granting process.

Submit all materials to

Wyoming EPSCoR, Wyo Hall, Room 422/424, 1000 E University Ave, Dept. 3622, Laramie, WY 82071-3622; (Phone: 766-2033 or 766-3544).
